Abstract:
In the face of increasingly fierce international market competition environment, it is of great practical significance to clarify China's embedment degree and division of labor status in the agricultural global value chain(AGVC) for further enhancing China's agricultural international trade status and competitiveness. Based on the framework of trade added value analysis and the data of world input-output table from 1995 to 2018, this research explored the agricultural value chain status and its evolutionary characteristics of China and other major economies. The Results were listed as follows. (1) China's share of agricultural value-added exports was growing rapidly, but mainly dominated by simple value chain activities. Meanwhile, the proportion of China's agricultural intermediate exports was relatively low, and China was still in the middle and low end of AGVC. (2) Both in terms of forward and backward participation rates, the AGVC participation level of China's sub-sectors was relatively low, and there was still a massive gap with that of developed countries in Europe and the US. (3) China’s AGVC status improved to varying degrees, and the “low-end locking in the value chain” dilemma had been significantly alleviated, with further momentum to catch up with leading countries. However, agro-pastoralism and fisheries were still in a state of “low participation and low status”. Thus, China should continue to promote the high level of agricultural openness, accelerate the breakthrough of agricultural “neck” technology shortcomings, cultivate more agricultural export enterprises with high production standards, high value-added exports and high brand recognition, and form a new competitive advantage with core agricultural technology and brand quality.
