Abstract: |
This study examines how agricultural technological advancements impact income disparities among farmers, with a particular focus on differences between the eastern and central-western regions of China, as well as regional inequality. This provides precise bases for policymakers, aiding in the promotion of agricultural modernization and shared prosperity among farmers, and offering new ideas for solutions. Using China's provincial panel from 2011 to 2021, this study employed the RIF regression model to investigate the impact of agricultural technological progress on income inequality among farmers, paying special attention to differences between the eastern and central-western regions. The findings indicated that technological progress in agriculture generally exacerbated income inequality, especially among higher-income farmers, consistent with human capital and capital accumulation theories. Technological advancements in the eastern region helped reduce income gaps, while in the central-western region, they intensified inequality. Urbanization levels and infrastructure improvements could mitigate the income inequality caused by technological progress. Cutting-edge agricultural technologies increased inequality, whereas improvements in technological efficiency could help reduce disparities. Based on these findings, policy recommendations are proposed: firstly, to optimize the dissemination strategy of agricultural technology according to regional differences, focusing on low-cost, highly adaptable technologies in the central-western region; secondly, to adjust agricultural support policies to lessen the impact of technological progress on income inequality among farmers in the central-western region; and finally, to encourage agricultural technology innovation and optimize innovation incentive mechanisms, ensuring that the benefits of technological progress are equitably shared among all farmers. |
