Abstract:
Agricultural ecological efficiency serves as a critical benchmark for measuring the level of Chinese-style agricultural modernization and plays a pivotal role in constructing the discourse system of modern large-scale agriculture and advancing the development of an agricultural powerhouse. As the core regions and pioneer zones for agricultural ecologicalization in China, the Yangtze River Economic Belt and the Yellow River Basin play a crucial role. Therefore, it is imperative to scientifically evaluate their agricultural ecological efficiency and identify the sources of heterogeneity. This research employed methods including the SBM model, the Dagum Gini coefficient method, kernel density estimation, and geographical detector, leveraging relevant data spanning from 2000 to 2022 to investigate the spatial-temporal evolution patterns and driving factors of the agricultural ecological efficiency in the Yangtze River Economic Belt and the Yellow River Basin. The research indicated that: (1) The agricultural ecological efficiency of the Yangtze River Economic Belt was lower than that of the Yellow River Basin, yet it exhibited stronger growth momentum. The agricultural ecological efficiency of the Yangtze River Economic Belt demonstrated a spatial pattern evolving continuously from "discrete and sporadic" to "polarized." In contrast, the Yellow River Basin displayed typical characteristics of concentrated and contiguous distribution. (2) The trend of agricultural ecological efficiency in the two major regions shifting from regional imbalance to regional balance was becoming increasingly pronounced; however, the polarization phenomenon within the Yellow River Basin remained more evident. (3) The degree of economic and social development, as well as the per capita agricultural added value, exerted a same-directional impact on the agricultural ecological efficiency in the two major regions. However, the per capita agricultural added value exerted a more significant impact on the agricultural ecological efficiency of the Yangtze River Economic Belt, while the level of agricultural scale demonstrated stronger explanatory power regarding the spatial differentiation of the agricultural ecological efficiency in the Yellow River Basin. This study has not only generates novel insights and innovative pathways for regional coordinated development but also contributes to the advancement of a green development mechanism. Moreover, it can also generate exploratory experiences that serve as valuable references and can be replicated and promoted.
